Invitation to Gothenburg June 2001

At the end of Sweden’s EU presidency, there will be an EU summit in Gothenburg, the 14th to 16th of June. Counter-summits and demonstrations are planned to meet the delegates. From 11th to 17th of June, there will be activities in Gothenburg, under the joint slogan "A different Europe". It will be a week of Seminars, meetings, demonstrations and fiesta! All this is arranged by a fast growing Scandinavian network "GBG2001 - for a different Europe" with 25 organisations (it will be 100 soon). Attached you find SACs preliminary schedule for the syndicalist activities.

We plan seminars about global trade union organisation during the week. Activists from Nepal, Bangladesh, South Africa, Chiapas, Sibiria and Korea will speak about union organising in their countries and global cooperation.

SAC will arrange a women-conference on Thursday 14th, and there will be a center for feminist activities during the whole week. See separate invitation attached.

SAC will arrange branch-meetings for the alternative unions on Friday the 15th of June 2001. The purpose is that revolutionary syndicalists from different parts of the world, but active in the same field of work, will be able to discuss their branch-specific problems as well as the opportunities and strategies for collective actions across the borders. (See further information below)

We will have a coordination meeting for Solidarity-net on Friday 15th - same time as the branches. We will continue our discussions to improve our cooperation.

There will be a public red and black meeting with presentations of different anarco-syndicalist organisations in the world. We hope this will be as successful as our last public meeting in Paris, May 2000

We will arrange pressconferences during the week, for this we need your participation. The topics will be

  • Globalisation
  • Women workers struggle
  • Branch issues
  • The revolutionary Syndicalistic movement

The branch-meetings are planned to be held parallel to each other, with introduction and conclusion as plenary meetings (all branches together). We estimate the meetings will go on the entire Friday, from app. 09.00 a.m. until the evening. Apart from the ordinary branch-meetings, we plan to hold meetings for negotiators who work cross-branches, helping their comrades and also for students and for unemployed people, providing people are interested in such meetings.

Topics to use as starting point for the meetings are planned to be:

  • The consequences of the ongoing privatisation in your branch.
  • The increasing use of insecure forms of employment, its effects and useful countermoves

To be able to plan these activities, getting an idea about which branches and languages will be present, how many persons will acquire lodging, what kind of premises will be needed and such things, we would appreciate to receive answers to the following questions from you a.s.a.p.

  • number of participants, their names
  • part of the programme where the person wants to participate
  • branches, employers and membership in section/syndicate for those interested in the branch meetings
  • duration of stay in Gothenburg
  • language spoken
  • need for beds
  • and other special information you think would be of importance
Please also let us know if there are persons interesting in sharing the more concrete responsibility for the respective meeting as introducer and/or translator.

Regarding the accommodation, our ambition is to lodge as many as possible, especially participants from other countries, at comrades’ places. In addition, there will be gymnasiums and/or camping-lots for accommodation-purposes. SAC will not pay for the costs of travels and accommodation. (But staying in comrades’ homes will be free-of-charge of course!)

We would appreciate to receive your notice before the end of February 2001. Please use the address below, or the email-address: lena.barrow@sac.se for your answer as well as for questions regarding the branch-meetings.

In solidarity,

Hannele Peltonen, General Secretary of SAC
Lena Barrow, Industrial secretary of SAC
